Blood Pressure at Glance

The most important part of the human body among all is ‘the heart’. It is a muscle about the size of an adult’s fist and it is the hardest working organ in the human body. Believe it or not, it starts working even before your birth and it will remain with you till your end! In fact, when it stops, you are no more.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is often a precursor to the heart disease. The blood pressure can be defined as force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels. This typically carries one of the most vital signs in the human body regarding the general or complication level in the health. Hypertension is a medical condition in which, the blood pressure is chronically elevated putting a person at risk.

It is therefore, important to control the disease before it starts bothering any of the vital organs in the body such as heart, kidney, liver and the brain depending upon the condition and the causative factors.

Usually, hypertension is considered as a precursor to the heart disease. The normal range for blood pressure in human bodies is 120-130 / 80-90 mmHg and in hypertension, it goes above. Hypertension has few early symptoms and therefore, many people are not aware that they have it unless the regularly checkup their BP.

High Blood Pressure - Making You at Risk

Hypertension is silent killer and therefore it is to be prevented the day it has been detected. Unfortunately, it produces some general symptoms like dizziness, headache and sometimes blurred vision which, people ignore. It is therefore recommended that people who are at their late 40s should regularly checkup their blood pressures. This is because the high blood pressure’s early symptoms must have been ignored many times before and without getting signals, a person totally takes it lightly.

The high blood pressure then finally comes with a big bang making patient semi-conscious and more badly, with high stroke. Regular checking up the blood pressure will ensure that you are running your heart and blood circulation normally. The hike is expected as you grow but again, the routine checkup will give you hint that at what time on you should take precaution to prevent hypertension.

How to Prevent High Blood Pressure

Lifestyle Modifications and Diet
Lifestyle changes may help to prevent high blood pressure. These changes, however, are proven as beneficial for hypertension but it may vary from person to person and mainly depends upon the degree of high blood pressure. However, if the condition is hereditary i.e. has come from fathers and ancestors, it is quite difficult to prevent it. The lifestyle modifications cannot reverse this adverse condition but may help to restrict it from getting bad to worse.

The most important among all the lifestyle changes is maintaining the normal weight. You can calculate your BMI ( Body Mass Index ) and can judge your body as underweight, overweight or with an ideal weight. Here, to prevent the high blood pressure, you need to be 18.5 to 24.9 of Body Mass Index.

Another factor that is very important to control is sodium intake in the diet. Reducing sodium in the diet to about 2-3 gm a day ( that comes to about one teaspoon ) is essential to keep the high blood pressure under control. Some of the naturopaths and Ayurvedic scholar agree that spicy and oily food also play important role in raising the blood pressure in a normal person.

Light morning walk in fresh air would be better as it will not only rejuvenate your body but will also help in circulating the blood throughout the body. One should also prevent taking alcohol drinks and avoid smoking as they are two of the most important causes for high blood pressure. One should consume low calorie intake, restricted dairy products, low-fat products and reduced amount of saturated and total fats.
The Role of Antihypertensive Medicines
If hypertension is identified in early stages, it can be well controlled with antihypertensive medications. These medicines bring the blood pressure down quickly and keep it down till they work. However, they cannot cure the disease completely but as long as they are in bloodstream, they control the pressure.

Generally, the prescription for lowering the elevated blood pressure will contain the drugs that belong to any of the five groups; a beta-blocker, an ACE ( angiotensin converting enzyme ) inhibitors, a diuretic, calcium channel blockers ( CCB ) or an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Any of these drugs either alone or in combination give protection against the hypertension.

Antihypertensives are a class of drugs that are used in medicine and in pharmacology treating a chronic condition hypertension or high blood pressure. Out of all above-mentioned class for treating hypertension, calcium channel blockers are class of choice for many doctors. Norvasc is one of the most popular brands for CCB, which is long acting. The drug Norvasc is the besylate salt of Amlodipine and it relaxes or widens the blood vessels on which there is a high blood pressure. The blood vessels include both; arteries as well as veins. This widening will make it easer for the heart to pump the blood throughout the body without any much effort and hence, the workload is reduced and so the risk of getting heart disease. Norvasc is therefore, the drug of choice for treating hypertension and angina in most of the cases. The drug is well approved by FDA and is majority of the prescriptions for anginas and hypertensions contain Norvasc worldwide.

Norvasc or calcium channel blockers help controlling the high pressure of blood for a full 24-hour time. It has shown great efficacy towards all type of hypertension; mild, moderate and severe. To gain the maximum benefit out of CCB or Norvasc, the drug is to be taken with an appropriate dosage and should be taken on regular basis.

Apart from chronic stable angina and high blood pressure, you can also prevent vasospasitc angina ( Prinzmetal or Variant angina ) with the help of Norvasc ( Amlodipine besylate ). However, it may require the combination of Norvasc with other antianginal drugs.

Proper exercises, strict diet, antihypertensive medications, alternative therapies such as Yoga, acupressure and reflexology are good options to prevent hypertension and to live happy with it.
