Nonprescription medication may be helpful in treating your diarrhea. Follow these tips when taking a nonprescription medication for diarrhea:
Use non-prescription (OTC) anti-diarrheal medication if you have diarrhea for longer than 6 hours. Do not use non-prescription (OTC) anti-diarrheal medications if you have bloody diarrhea, a high fever, or other signs of serious illness. See your physician immediately.
There are several types of anti-diarrheal medications: those that thicken the stool (such as Kaopectate), those that absorb water, probiotics, and those that slow intestinal spasms (such as Imodium and Pepto Bismol).
Please note that some anti-diarrheal medications should only be used by adults or older children. Be sure to read the package instructions carefully, especially before giving any product to an infant or young child.
